LIFE COASTER by DANIEL SCHÄFER

After more than 10 years working as a photographer and focusing on the development of his technical skills for the perfect finish, Daniel Schäfer has come to his photographic artistic sensibility here through architecture, interiors, travel and portrait. Nowadays, with a pronounced geometric graphic style and a very organic, contemporary and cosmopolitan point of view, his artistic works go into the digital search of new framings, compositions and perspectives to find a mixture of a classical approach of the Renaissance construction and powerful contemporary abstractions. His photo-graphic point of view is made up of vanishing lines, movements, contrasts, lights and shadows, textures and colors. Meanwhile the human being -mysterious, disturbing or solitary- wanders his particular imagery.

:: Based on his nocturnal impressions of the series Oktoberfest, Daniel Schäfer and Myra Vidal Art Show present for the first time the exhibition Life Coaster, consisting of 12 artworks made between 2005 and 2009.

“During several years, I have felt myself captivated by the lights of the roller coasters and through this fascination was born the exhibition Life Coaster.          I particularly like to compare this selection of images with Life because each piece is able to reflect the power, turns, games or surprises that can be experienced in our daily life.”

The exhibition shows a peculiar view of the Oktoberfest, the famous annual folk festival celebrated in Munich, where the intensity of colour stands in contrast with the deep black of the night and originates a graphic composition with people participating occasionally as foreign objects of a surrealistic world. Just like the contrasts of the life itself:

“Life is a Roller Coaster and we are sitting in the first row”.

AMAVIDA y MYRA VIDAL ART SHOW

How do agitated men find silence in the modern world?

Where can they find protective space?

26/03/2011 - 19h

UNRAST / DESASOSIEGO

by Nathalie Fari (Performance) & Daniel Schäfer (Photography)

In today’s post-modern age, total silence is a phenomenon of the past, or at least

something more romanticised than actually experienced. It is nowadays almost impossible to appreciate moments of peace and quiet, or stillness, particularly in big cities. This not only damages people’s quality of life, i.e. billions of people are losing sleep and quiet time, but it also produces a dynamic of reducing the distances between A and B – or even getting rid of these distances completely.

Using this state of “agitation” as well as the above questions as a starting point, the performance artist Nathalie Fari and the photographer Daniel Schäfer have together launched an intervention and research project, which takes place in public spaces and which particularly focuses on the search for such “protective spaces” (or, metaphorically speaking, “oases of peace and quiet”).

The project’s first city was Madrid. Adopting similar postures, Nathalie developed her restricted, short actions in several public places, while Daniel used photography to give her the space. Their goal was not to “mirror” these often-strange places, but rather to create a contrast: a resting place (or point) in the middle of the urban landscape and amid all the movement taking place in it.

TRUST YOUR FEELINGS  21/06 – 30/07/2011

VERNISSAGE TUESDAY 21/06 - 21H / Calle Puebla 14, Madrid

The main exhibition will feature works by JUAN MIGUEL PALACIOS, LO SUPER, JORDI GOMEZ and DANIELSCHÄFER. In addition special performance nights and artist talks will be hosted by OSCAR VALERO, AKASHA,  JUAN MIGUEL PALACIOS and more.

Susan Sontag, one of the outstanding American writers of contemporary culture, in one of her always controversial essays, “Against Interpretation” (1968), presents a radical opposition to the search of meaning in Art and defends individual intuition and a personal art experience. This was the inspiration for the collective exhibition “Trust Your Feelings”.

Myra Vidal works with independent artists who use different ways of aesthetic expression such as performance, digital photo-collage, photography, contemporary graphic arts or sound art. The freedom and honesty of their artistic point of view emerge, in a globalized world where excess and uniformity shape consciousness.

This project is possible thanks to the support of Eduardo G. Kaibide.

Come in and trust your feelings!

VERNISSAGE MARTES 21/6 - 21HORAS

Calle Puebla 14, Madrid

MYRA VIDAL presents LO SUPER

A FUNDRAISING EXHIBITION FOR AND BY THE KIDS OF AMAVIDA.

»A Calcutta slum. Fourteen kids. Fourteen cameras.

Stories of Calcutta told through the innocent and direct eyes of its children.

Natural and authentic snapshots, this has nothing to do with photojournalism but fragments of daily life, a description of reality by its own protagonists.«

Mi casa. Mi slum is a photographic project undertaken by the NGO Amavida in Calcutta, thanks to the collaboration of the Spanish photographers La Skimal and Gina Segura, who travelled to India in 2011 to give workshops in photography to the school children of Joyjeet Das Memorial School.

As a result of these workshops, more than 150 photographs taken by the children from the Boro Bagan and Joro Basti slums make up a charity exhibition organized by Myra Vidal Art Show to raise funds to continue the educational project of Amavida in Calcutta.

Exhibition and sale of photos at stand 12 of FOTOMADRID
